Guidelines on Delivery of Potable Water through Water Trucks

23 October 2020

One notable application that can benefit from water trucks is the delivery of potable water. Most of the time, these trucks are sent out to supply properties that experience water shortage. Emergency situations may also call for the need for water trucks. However, there are also instances where these trucks are utilised to provide drinkable water for outdoor projects, activities, and occasions.

But before attempting to hire or acquire water trucks for your potable water delivery, there are some important things that you should do and consider first.

Parts and Equipment

For smooth water delivery operations, you must opt for water trucks that are specifically designed for storing huge volumes of water. Trucks that are only converted to store portable storage tanks are not recommended for water delivery since they may suddenly detach from the flatbed and cause accidents.

And for potable water delivery purposes, the components of your storage tank must be made from stainless steel or other materials that will not affect the quality of the water. Some types of metal can significantly react with water. As a result, your potable water may have some particles that come from the metal components of your truck, which can be dangerous once it is consumed.

Aside from the recommended type of metal, your water truck should also have a dust-proof lockable cover. This component will help prevent dust, insects, and others from infiltrating your potable water. Other components that are needed for your potable water truck are a chlorine testing kit and water pumps.

Appropriate Cleaning

Cleanliness must be prioritised whenever delivering potable water to a specific site or community. Therefore, your water truck and its components must be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly. Regular inspection and assessment must be done to ensure that all components are in pristine condition.

Once all components are checked, you may want to start the cleaning process by emptying the tank. You can do this by opening the outlet valve or tap to easily drain out any water inside the tank. Then, you must scrub and clean the internal surfaces of the tank through a mixture of detergent and hot water. This solution can work alongside with a brush or a high-pressure jet. Once you have applied the solution to the entirety of the tank and other integral components, you must flush them with clean water. It is important to wash everything continuously while the valves are open to avoid leaving some residue of the solution.

Thorough Chlorination

Disinfection of the water truck for potable water delivery can be done through chlorination. Chlorine is typically sent to the water truck through high-strength calcium hypochlorite (HSCH). To effectively disinfect your water truck, you must fill it with a quarter of clean water and subsequently add 80 grams of granular HSCH into the tank. The addition of these granules should be done for every 1,000 litres of total water tank capacity. Once the tank is already full of water, you must then close and leave it for one day. Doubling the amount of chlorine can, alternatively, lessen the disinfection process to 8 hours.
