Guidelines in Delivering Potable Water with Water Tanks

Water tanks have been very useful in carrying and transporting water and other liquid elements to various sites and locations. Some sectors that enjoy the capabilities of water tanks include agriculture, construction, fire control, and mining.

One application of water tanks that make them great for several sectors is dust control. To ensure that site projects can be done safely and effectively, water tanks are deployed to tamp down dust. Another application of these tanks is fire control. Given the capacity of water tanks, they can easily contribute to putting out the fire. Other applications of water tanks are soil compaction and irrigation.

But one application of water tanks that can be useful in general is the delivery of potable water. Some areas may require potable water due to lack of water supply or any other emergencies and disasters. And since this type of water will be consumed by many people, it must be delivered with care.

Water Tank Specifications for Potable Water Delivery

When delivering potable water delivery to certain communities and places, the water tanks should possess specifications and qualities that are deemed suitable for the said application.

One of the qualities of a good water tank for potable water delivery is that its components must be made from food-grade materials. Some materials that can boast this classification include plastic, stainless steel, mild steel, aluminium, and fibreglass. These materials should also not contaminate the water and follow the requirements of Australian Standard (AS) 4020:2005.

Aside from their materials, the water tank should be fitted with water hoses that can be safe for drinking water and can be maintained effectively. Appropriate backflow prevention mechanisms should likewise be present to protect the water from cross-contamination. These mechanisms should follow the requirements that are stated in AS 3500.1:2003.

Other specifications of a water tank for potable water delivery include a suitable opening for easy inspection and cleaning of contact surfaces and signs for proper labelling.

Appropriate Cleaning and Sanitation of Water Tank

Generally, water tanks that will be used for delivery should be cleaned at least every three months. Their surfaces must be cleaned to effectively remove dirt. They can be removed and eradicated by using appropriate detergent and flushing with potable water.

After cleaning the surfaces and crucial areas of the water tanks, they should be sanitised to remove disease-causing microorganisms. These microorganisms must be eliminated to prevent people from obtaining harmful diseases and illnesses from drinking the water from the tank. The sanitation process can be done by spraying a solution that contains 10 mg/L chlorine into the surfaces of the tanks. This solution must be left for five minutes before rinsing with drinking water.

Alternatively, the tanks can be sanitised by filling them with drinking water that contains at least 5 mg/L of chlorine and leaving it for at least 30 minutes. Afterwards, the drinking water with chlorine solution must be drained and rinsed with drinking water.
